Jake Gyllenhaal gives an acting masterclass in this instant classic thriller set in Los Angeles’ nocturnal underbelly. Gyllenhaal stars as Lou Bloom, a sociopathic creep who discovers the high-stakes world of freelance crime journalism. Accidentally stumbling across a news crew while at the scene of a car wreck, Lou muscles into the dangerous cutthroat realm of “nightcrawling”: where each police siren wail equals a possible windfall and victims are converted into dollars and cents. Aided by a veteran amoral TV producer (Rene Russo), a naive camera assistant (Riz Ahmed) and an equally creepy competitive nemesis (Bill Paxton), Lou blurs the line between observer and participant to become the star of his own story.
