John Ferguson (James Stewart) is a detective suffering from Vertigo after a recent chase gone wrong. He’s forced to retire and become a private investigator when an old college friend (Tom Helmore) hires John after learning that his wife Madeleine (Kim Novac) has become possessed with her great-grandmother. As the investigation continues John becomes obsessed with Madeleine and as he gets closer to her she eventually kills herself. He gets nightmares about her and it eventually gets worse when he sees a woman, Judy (Kim Novac) on the street who looks just like her. He tries to mold Judy into his idea of Madeleine. So much so that it could break him further or even her.
