Celebrate Lunar New Year with the Hong Kong Cinema Club as we revisit this completely bonkers sci-fi comedy produced by (and co-starring) Tsui Hark! In I LOVE MARIA, “The Hero Gang” is causing havoc in the streets of Hong Kong using robots to do their bidding, one of which is a humanoid modelled after the obsessive gang leader’s beloved moll, Maria (Sally Yeh). Due to a malfunction, a wacky inventor for the police (John Shum) is able to reprogram the humanoid version of Maria to use her super abilities to save the city. Alongside an alcoholic crook (Tsui Hark) and a nerdy journalist (Tony Leung Chiu-Wai), they team up with the humanoid to take down “The Hero Gang” and end their reign of terror.

I LOVE MARIA will be presented uncut, from an HD remaster, in its original Cantonese w/ English subtitles. Our event will include a preshow, trailer reel and themed-zine (NOTE: zines will be sold in-person).
