Hi! We’re Jude Rossotto and Stella Mulroney! We’re the founders of Mouth Bone productions. We’ve been theatre kids for as long as we can remember – we met at theatre school at age eight, and have been best friends ever since. We’ve done over 25 productions together, and both have an indescribable love for theatre and performance.
However, once we reached a certain age, we became discouraged with what we found to be a profound lack of diversity, inclusivity, and opportunity in the industry. Jude struggled with being misgendered or told he couldn’t play “real male” roles. As a bigger girl, Stella was constantly being type-cast as mothers or comic relief characters. We both spent a lot of time playing objects and animals.
We were devastated to learn that our lifelong love no longer held a place for us. We didn’t want to be a part of a community that blatantly favored white, straight, cis-gendered, thin, and able-bodied people above anyone else who didn’t meet the standard.
Then, it hit us; if we wanted things to change, we could do it ourselves. Thus, MouthBone Productions was born. We are striving to create a Los Angeles-based theatre company with completely blind casting. This means regardless of your gender, race, body type, etc., if you’re the best for the role, then it’s yours! We want to create a space for the multitude of talented and diverse actors who have consistently been pushed aside in favor of those who fit the industry’s cookie-cutter norm. We hope to be a part of the movement towards inclusivity and equity that is already budding within theatre culture, and use our extensive experience within theatre to create productions that are innovative beyond just their blind casting.
We’ve assembled a little band of weirdos and rejects so far. Maybe one day it will become an army. All that matters to us is that we’re fostering a space of opportunity for those who love the craft, no matter who they may be.
